Calenso has already reported on the spread of digitalization in the medical sector. However, many practices are reluctant to implement digital solutions. Calenso shows possible obstacles and concerns in the medical sector in connection with the realization and implementation of online appointment scheduling. It is also important to us to dispel these concerns. We show why digitalization is easy to implement in the medical sector.
Concerns of the medical sector during implementation
The medical sector is very diverse in terms of its requirements and range of services. The following reasons against making appointments online were mentioned more frequently:
- Patients often book an appointment on site afterwards1
- Duration of treatment cannot be generalized and therefore cannot be estimated1
- There is no electronic agenda available in the practice1
- There is no pressure, as the waiting rooms are usually full1
- Interfaces to existing practice software are missing, which would require redundant calendar management1
- Patients want to be able to explain their concerns over thephone8,13
- Appointment is not considered binding by patients8
- Unnecessary idle time due to keeping appointment times free for online appointments8
- The practical and financial benefits are underestimated9
- Legaluncertainties10,11
- Risk of misuse of patient data10
- Technical susceptibility to errors10
- Loss of control12, 13
- Rural regions (Kiel) have poor access to the Internet13
- Personal contact required for reliable assessment and clarification13
- Availability is not known for patients13
Relativization of the obstacles
This list shows that there is a lot of resistance to digital expansion in the medical sector. Many of the points mentioned are clearly understandable. The main point in favor of online appointments is the common understanding that this service is an extension and not a replacement. This means that people who need a personal explanation or do not have an internet connection can still call the practice.
Data protection involves additional effort, but is manageable. In order for this to be guaranteed, the patient must consent to the transfer of personal data. In addition, the privacy policy must be supplemented to include this transfer and the use of the third-party provider (incl. website). Calenso has even prepared the corresponding text for you. Simply add this to your privacy policy. This ensures compliance with data protection.14
Calenso would like to mention that integration into practice software is possible. More information can be found here.
Successful implementations
These obstacles show that they are there but are not insurmountable. That is why we have looked for examples from various medical fields that have been successful. Check out some successful implementations in this post!
